Some Frequently Asked Questions

What is WordPress?

WordPress powers more than 17% of the web – a figure that rises every day. Everything from simple websites, to blogs, to complex portals and enterprise websites, and even applications, are built with WordPress.  WordPress combines simplicity for users and publishers with under-the-hood complexity for developers. This makes it flexible while still being easy-to-use.  This video explains the basics of this powerful CMS (Content Management System).

What can I use WordPress for?

WordPress started as just a blogging system, but has evolved to be used as full content management system and so much more through the thousands of plugins, widgets, and themes, WordPress is limited only by your imagination. (And tech chops.)

What are WordPress Themes?

The WordPress theme is like an outfit in that it makes WordPress look better, it is an expression of a user’s individual style, and it can provide some nifty conveniences and functionality. Sort of like pockets, zippers, or reversible jackets.  There are thousands of free and premium themes to choose from.  I would gladly recommend a few and help you choose one.  I use the “child-theme” approach in my development process.  This allows me to customize a specific theme and allow for easier updates to the “parent” theme: faster development time + easier to maintain/update = lower cost to my client.

What is SEO (Search Engine Optimization)?

SEO stands for “search engine optimization.” It is the process of getting traffic from the “free,” “organic,” “editorial” or “natural” listings on search engines. All major search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Bing have such results, where web pages and other content such as videos or local listings are shown and ranked based on what the search engine considers most relevant to users. Payment isn’t involved, as it is with paid search ads.

Why is SEO so important?

An important aspect of Search Engine Optimization is making your website easy for both users and search engine robots to understand. Although search engines have become increasingly sophisticated, in many ways they still can’t see and understand a web page the same way a human does. SEO helps the engines figure out what each page is about, and how it may be useful for users.

How can SEO help my business/website?

Just as a map helps you find your destination, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) helps people find your website. I can improve your rankings with search engines by linking the most popular industry-specific search engine keywords and tags throughout your site. SEO increases your online visibility by reducing the number of clicks it takes to find you, which leads to increased sales. Contact me to find out how SEO will help grow your business!

What do I need to start building my website?

You need three things (and I would gladly recommend and/or help you with any of these):

A Domain Name – A domain name is what your visitors will type in the address bar to find you (for example: www.masomh.com is my domain name).  A .com domain name is the most commonly used extension.  There are many other extensions (.net, .org, .gov, .edu, .tv, etc).  You can do a quick search for a domain name at www.instantdomainsearch.com.

A Web Hosting Company – A web hosting company is like your space that you lease for your business except it’s on the web. This is where all of your website files go.  If you don’t know who to use for web hosting, I have a company I have been using for a very long time.

A Professional Web Designer – Last but not least.  Preferably someone who has experience in the latest web technologies/languages (jQuery, HTML5, CSS3, and a SEO friendly approach).  Remember, your website will be one of  the first things a potential customer will see.  Keep this in mind before hiring your designer.

Do you design and develop websites for clients only located in Atlanta?

Not at all.  Due to the nature of this process, working remotely and communicating is key.  As long as we are able to contact each other via email, phone, or skype – I would be able to work with any client located in the United States or Canada.

How many pages can I have on my site?

It depends on what you are looking for.  You can have as many pages as you want. Some of the main pages you’ll want to consider are: Home, About Us, Products or Services, Contact Us, FAQ.  In addition to these main pages, you’ll want some complimentary pages as well to enhance and expand on your main pages.  For example, you may want to add a testimonial page or a page to describe a service in depth.

How long does it take to develop/host a site?

There is no real answer to this because it all depends on what you are looking for.  On average though, a static 5-10 page website could be done in about 5-6 business days.  This of course is after all initial questions are answered and expectations are discussed.  I usually have lots of questions for my clients, and if they are all answered in a timely manner, getting your site up in a timely manner will be no problem whatsoever.

How much does a WordPress-powered site cost?

This is another tough question to give a straight answer to this as there are many factors that go into the cost.  As a freelancer, I rarely subcontract any of the work out and handle every stage of the development process.  On average though, my sites start around $750.   I have also created some more complex websites with all the bells and whistles for $3000+.  The more you help with generating the website’s content (pictures, testimonials, etc) the more you’ll save in overall costs.

Do you do contract work for other developers/companies?

I sure do.  I specialize in the front-end aspect of the development process.  I am a software engineer by trade and I work with enterprise applications everyday.  I am familiar with CVS and meeting deadlines.  Depending on the tasks/project at hand, I usually charge by the hour or a flat rate for an entire task.  Contact me with any questions, comments, or requests.

Do you have any type of maintenance plan?

Absolutely.  It is very important to regularly update your website with blogs, pictures, or any other relative content to keep you ahead of your competitors in search rankings.  I also will keep your files updated, backup your site databases, and ensure you are at top performance.

Do I have to stay with you to keep my website?

Absolutely not.  Once I design your website and you check it off, you own it.  I request that all my clients own their domain name and hosting (ensuring that they are the legal registrant).

Can I see how many visitors have viewed my site?

Absolutely.  I will set up a Google Analytics account as well as a plugin so you can see the daily visits to your site along with other trends.

Do I get an email account with my website?

Yes, your hosting company will give you the ability to set up email address under your chosen domain name.  Most companies will allow many email addresses.  I can also set you up with using the native Gmail user interface with your new email address.

Can you update my current website?

Yes I can.  I will need to have the FTP login information for your site, and if you have a CMS (ie. WordPress), I’ll need the admin login and password as well.  I would like to reiterate though the importance of converting your current website to a CMS platform.  In the end, it will be cheaper for you.

If you you design my website, will I be able to find my site on the search engines?

To properly increase your rankings with the major search engines, it will take a bit of time.  If I do the basic SEO optimizations as I customize your site, it will take a bit longer.  However, if I provide full SEO optimizations for each page, post, picture, etc. – it will take significantly less time.
